PROJECT GOALS

The International SolarCenter in Berlin and the "21 Bridges to the Solar Age” have been recognized as an " EXPO 2000 Decentralized Project in Berlin”.

In the following, we would like to introduce the ISC's concept, the project organizers, and the cooperation partners of the 21 bridges to the solar age, as well the wide variety of opportunities you have to participate. We would be pleased to have the privilege of greeting you as a future user of the information network, tenant, operator, exhibitor, shareholder, member of the association, sponsor, or cooperation partner.

The solution of environmental problems on the local, regional, national, and global level is the central challenge for the state, business, and society during the transition to the 21st century. To reduce the burdens on the environment, mankind must learn to save energy and to use it more rationally, as well as to grasp and use the most important natural source of energy - the sun - as the source for our planet's energy supply. This presents especially challenging tasks for a city like Berlin, with its huge construction plans, its newly-gained surrounding territory, and its function as a bridge between East and West and between North and South. Establishing the International SolarCenter will be a substantial contribution to fulfilling Berlin's tasks as a capital. The ISC will broadcast signals for a new solar architecture, enable a wide variety of companies, services, and initiatives to present themselves, and provide impulses for practical applications in an ecological economy and solar energy future.

AGENDA 21

The AGENDA 21 elucidates how the basis of consensual processes is needed if programs, laws, and regulations are to be adjusted to the necessities of sustainable development in a way that is accepted and supported by the general public on site.

Thus, Chapter 28 of AGENDA 21 explicitly calls on communities to engage in dialogue with their citizens, local organizations, and private enterprise and to draw up a "community AGENDA 21”. Through consultations and the creation of consensus, communities can learn from their citizens, local organizations, and citizens', business, and trade organizations, and can obtain the information required to formulate the most appropriate strategies.

By declaring the ISC an important element toward implementing Berlin's "energy strategy”, the Senat of Berlin has underscored the importance of the International SolarCenter for information and public relations work in the framework of campaigns to save energy and to use renewable energy.

GOALS IN THE AREA OF ECONOMIC POLICY AND ECONOMIC STRUCTURE

The International SolarCenter sets itself the task of contributing to improving the competitiveness of companies and services working in the field of environmentally sound and regenerative technologies and applications. The ISC will perform intensive public relations and consulting in the areas of energy conservation, the rational use of energy, and the use of solar energy.

By demonstrating and introducing these technologies and methods and as a center of attraction for innovative enterprises, the ISC will provide impulses pointing the way to the future for labor market and economic structural policies.

The International SolarCenter is a multi-functional communications, information, and consulting center, an interface for solar research, development, and application, a consultation, service, and visitor center, and a coordinating site for solar initiatives. It will offer citizens of all ages and from all social classes a broad spectrum of opportunities to experience and learn ecological behavior.

SITE

Stralauer Platz

The concept of the International SolarCenter is a unique architectural contribution to setting the course for the solar age during the transition to the 21st century.

Its concept for use, buildings, and operators projects the integration of the specialized field, business, and the general public, in order to promote the rational and regenerative use of energy on a broad basis.

Across from the Hauptbahnhof, the main train station in the middle of Berlin on Stralauer Platz, the interface between the eastern and western parts of the once-divided city, the International SolarCenter offers excellent local and long-distance transportation connections. As a "high-tech” site of communication and experience, and thanks to this this ecologically sound transportation infrastructure, the International SolarCenter is highly accessible for the various user groups. The International SolarCenter's integration in the downtown "Spree District” provides innovative and pioneering impulses for the local surroundings and for Berlin's architectural culture.

With its shadow-free, south-oriented shore location, the building will be a "visiting card" for solar architecture pointing the way to the future and will act as a magnet for the practical quality of neighboring service sites in the downtown area.

The property's Spree River frontage and the hiking and strolling paths leading immediately past the building allow direct access via waterway as well as easy, attractive access by foot.
